Save St Drostan's

Latest news and comments

St Drostan's Home is a purpose-built residential home for elderly people. It is situated in Old Deer, a beautiful village in the district of Buchan in the county of Aberdeenshire.

Aberdeenshire Council wishes to close St Drostan's and disperse the residents to other homes in the region. The home is a well-run and happy place. The most recent reports on the home published on the web by the Care Commission confirm that the home is well run despite certain physical shortcomings. The residents and their friends and relatives are very appreciative of the excellent standard of care provided by an exceptionally friendly, helpful, staff, in pleasant surroundings. The residents, their relatives and friends, and the staff do not want the home to close.

The Council alleges that it cannot afford to refurbish the the home in order to satisfy the requirements of the Care Commission which publishes the standards that must be satisfied for a care home to continue to be registered. The complete document, about 70 pages long, is entitled National Care Standards Care homes for older people.

Despite having been built in the 1970s St Drostan's possesses all the facilities and properties required by the current standards, and satisfies many of the recommendations based on more recent thinking about the requirements for the residential accommodation of old people. More details.

Deadline

On Thursday 28th June 2007 the Policy and Resources Committee took the decision to close St Drostan's Care Home on 30th September following. The last defence is the law.
